Cyprus maritime scholarships to empower women, promote equality

Deputy Minister for Shipping, Marina Hadjimanolis, announced this week that the Deputy Ministry of Shipping has integrated gender equality promotion activities into its operations. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The commitment is further exemplified by the adoption of campaigns designed to inform and encourage more women to enter the maritime industry.

These efforts aim to foster a supportive environment and offer training and mentoring opportunities.

Among the notable initiatives is the awarding of two scholarships for postgraduate studies specialising in maritime education programmes.

Specifically, one scholarship is allocated for the MSc in Maritime Affairs at the World Maritime University in Sweden, and another for the Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Maritime Law at the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) in Malta.

These scholarships, totaling €20,000 each, are reserved exclusively for women of Cypriot nationality who meet the criteria outlined in the Call for Applications.

This allocation reaffirms the Cyprus government’s dedication to advancing gender equality, a core aspect of the National Strategy for Gender Equality 2024-2026.

The scholarships are available for the academic year 2025-2026 at designated academic institutions abroad that specialise in shipping issues.
