Cyprus government employment increases in February

Cyprus’ government employment increased by 599 people in February 2025, a rise of 1.1 per cent, compared to February 2024, reaching a total of 55,296 employees.

According to the state statistical service, this growth was primarily driven by an increase in employment within the educational service, which grew by 3.8 per cent.

Moreover, the report showed that employment in the civil service and the educational service increased by 0.2 per cent and 3.8 per cent respectively. In contrast, employment in the security forces declined by 0.8 per cent.

As of February 2025, the civil service employed 11,991 permanent employees, 4,162 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1,381 employees with contracts of definite duration, and 5,663 hourly paid workers.

Compared to February 2024, the number of permanent employees in the civil service remained the largest group, representing 51.7 per cent of the workforce, while employees with contracts of definite duration represented the smallest group at 6 per cent.

In the educational service, there were 12,461 permanent employees, 946 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4,689 employees with contracts of definite duration, and 155 hourly paid workers.
Permanent employees comprised the largest proportion at 68.3 per cent, while hourly paid workers were the smallest group, making up only 0.8 per cent.

In the security forces, 8,470 permanent employees, 4,362 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 268 employees with contracts of definite duration, and 748 hourly paid workers were employed.

Permanent employees made up the largest proportion of the workforce at 61.2 per cent, while employees with contracts of definite duration were the fewest, at only 1.9 per cent.
