Cyprus’ full connection with the European eIDAS network is underway and will allow secure cross-border transactions between the member states of the European Union.
An announcement by the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation says that the EU regulation provides for the mutual recognition and cross-border use of national electronic identification (eID) schemes maintained by the EU member states, for the purposes of accessing public digital services of other member states where similar schemes operate.
Cyprus has implemented the national eIDAS node, which is connected to the corresponding nodes of the other member states, and has already completed its interconnection with seventeen EU countries.
The connection of Cyprus with the other member states that have a national electronic identification system, as well as with the European Commission, is also underway, a process that is expected to be completed within the next two months, specifically within May 2025.
The goal is the seamless use of trust and electronic identification services throughout the EU, providing greater security, speed and convenience in every online activity.
A necessary condition for interoperability between national eID schemes is the notification to the European Commission and the assurance level of each national scheme.
Cyprus’ National digital identity under the name IDMe.cy, has been approved by the European Commission at the highest level of security (High Assurance). Therefore, Cypriot citizens-holders of eID can access, using their electronic identity, digital services of other member states that have connected to the eIDAS network, whose citizens gain corresponding access to the public digital services of Cyprus.
The “Connection with eIDAS” is given as an option to European citizens in the context of the use of the common access mechanism to state services of the Republic of Cyprus CY Login.
