Cambodia and India to firm up ties in trade, technology

Cambodia and India yesterday agreed to enhance the existing collaboration in technology, trade, and investment as the two nations have enjoyed decades of diplomatic relations, with ongoing progress in multiple areas of collaboration.

A consensus to the effect was agreed upon during a meeting between Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), and Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, the Indian Ambassador to Cambodia.

The Ambassador and his delegation paid a courtesy visit to discuss bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, Ambassador Bawitlung said that he is honoured for being appointed as India’s representative to Cambodia. He highly valued the long-standing ties between the two nations and acknowledged Cambodia’s recent economic and social development.

He emphasized that, “Given the steady growth in diplomatic relations and collaboration across multiple sectors, India and Cambodia should elevate their partnership to a higher level.”

In response, Chanthol welcomed the Ambassador Bawitlung’s views and expressed appreciation for his diplomatic mission in Cambodia. He reiterated that, “Cambodia and India still have many promising areas for cooperation, particularly in technology and industry.”

He also expressed confidence that Ambassador Bawitlung’s tenure would further strengthen and expand bilateral relations. During the discussion, both sides shared their past experiences in attracting investment and promoting economic growth.

Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister mentioned the possibility of organizing an Investment Roadshow to India in the future, aiming to attract more foreign direct investment to Cambodia.

On March 13, Prime Minister Hun Manet also welcomed the Indian Ambassador at the Peace Palace.

According to a statement on Mr Hun Manet’s social media, Ambassador Vanlalvawna highlighted the long-standing friendship, solidarity, and cultural ties between India and Cambodia.

He emphasized that Cambodia is a key partner for India and, given the decades of diplomatic relations, growing cooperation across multiple sectors, and emerging opportunities, the bilateral relationship should be further strengthened.

In response, Mr Hun Manet expressed his appreciation for the progress in Cambodia-India relations and thanked the Indian government and people for their support in Cambodia’s socio-economic development, particularly in human resource training and capacity building.

He noted that there are still many opportunities to expand cooperation for mutual benefit and expressed confidence that the Ambassador’s role would help enhance and deepen bilateral ties.

Both sides also explored ways to boost collaboration in various areas, including the economy, trade, investment, national defense and security, tourism, and culture. They discussed the possibility of increasing direct flights between India and Cambodia and strengthening people-to-people and business-to-business connections.
