Prime Minister Hun Manet urged provincial and municipal administrations to continue developing pedestrian streets, also known as Walk Streets, to attract more national and international tourists.
The premier stated on Monday at the official inauguration ceremony of the two-storey Morodok Techo Flyover at the Kbal Thnal area in Phnom Penh.
He emphasised that these Walk Streets not only improve the well-being and livelihoods of citizens but also play a key role in attracting both national and international tourists.
“Our citizens are going out more, and I encourage all provinces and cities to prepare Walk Streets where people can have fun and exercise. This is a part of the city’s development. In all provinces, I see efforts to create public spaces, and I encourage more such initiatives,” said Mr Hun Manet.
He also acknowledged that provinces have been working to establish public parks, with each one competing to create better spaces for their communities. The Prime Minister expressed his support and appreciation for these efforts.
On the occasion, he stated that he ordered the Phnom Penh municipal to set aside approximately 70 hectares of land in the Tomnup Kob Srov area of Khan Pursenchey for the development of a public park.
Mr Hun Manet also called on other provincial administrations to follow the example of Preah Sihanouk province by developing public parks for the benefit of their local residents.
Cambodia’s First Lady, Pich Chanmony, on Saturday enjoyed the attractions of Walk Street, tried delicacies from food stalls and posed for photos with locals and tourists.
Spend the weekend walking and experiencing the actual scene on Walk Street. Eat my favorite food and feel a sense of missing childhood. “I really want to come again with my idol, Prime Minister Hun Manet,” Chanmony wrote on her social media.
Meanwhile, to provide more fun and thank the citizens who participated in supporting the Walk Street, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration will open the Walk Street for 5 days from April 12 to 16, along Sisowath Avenue, from in front of the Royal Palace to the cultural and historical site of Wat Phnom.
It is worth noting that the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has launched the first phase of the highly anticipated ‘Walking Street’ along the riverbank, starting every Saturday and Sunday evening from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
