Cypriot village keeps unique Easter tradition alive with Sunday bonfire

The village of Mammari in the Nicosia district is once again breaking with national tradition by lighting its Easter bonfire not on Holy Saturday night, as is customary across Cyprus, but on Easter Sunday instead.

Locals gather in the village square to celebrate the Resurrection in their own distinct way, adding a personal touch to the island’s Easter customs. Though the origins of the practice are unclear, residents have preserved the tradition for many years, seeing it as an expression of community identity.

Unlike other parts of Cyprus where bonfires sometimes lead to disorder, Mammari’s celebration is characterised by a calm and orderly atmosphere. The village continues to mark the occasion peacefully, honouring Easter in a way that sets it apart.

Authorities on alert over safety concerns

Meanwhile, authorities remain on alert island-wide during the Easter period, as unsanctioned bonfires by youth groups have led to safety risks and minor disturbances in several areas again this year. Police have been monitoring hotspots to ensure public safety.
