‘Chinese investment in Cambodia surged following Prez Xi’s visit’

Over the first four months of 2025, the number of Chinese investors and tourists visiting Cambodia increased by approximately 20 to 30 percent compared to the same period last year, driven in part by renewed interest in investment opportunities following the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Making these remarks on Monday, President of the Cambodia Confederation of Investors Association (CCIA) and also a Chairman of the Cambodia Footwear Association (CFA), Cambodia Footwear Association (CFA), Ly Khun Thai said that since January, investment from China has led to a significant influx of investors into Cambodia, particularly following the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“These are investors coming to Cambodia to explore and understand investment opportunities,” he explained.

“Not only are we seeing a high number of investors, but many Chinese tourists are also arriving for leisure. Our association receives visits from Chinese investors almost every day.”

“Between January and early May this year, the number of Chinese investors and tourists coming to Cambodia increased by approximately 20 to 30 percent compared to the same period last year. I hope that this upward trend is likely to continue, as the Chinese President’s visit has boosted investor confidence,” Khun Thai emphasised.

“Many investors have contacted our association, expressing their interest in investing in Cambodia.”

Khun Thai went on to add that this trust stems from the visit of top Chinese leaders to Cambodia, which has significantly boosted the confidence of Chinese investors in exploring and investing in the country.

He also urged unions and workers to strengthen their skills and work diligently in order to seize the opportunities brought by increased foreign investment, which he said would lead to more job creation for the Cambodian people.

“I hope and believe that our workers will rise to the occasion and make the most of this opportunity for their future. One day, they may be able to establish their own small factories to serve the domestic market or export abroad,” he added.

According to a report by the Cambodia Footwear Association (CFA), as of April 10, 2025, Cambodia had exported approximately $166 million worth of footwear to international markets.

It may be recalled that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Cambodia from April 17-18 drew significant attention not only in Cambodian and Chinese circles but also on the international stage.

According to the outcome of the state visit of Chinese President Xi, the Chinese side applauded Cambodia’s remarkable achievements in maintaining political stability, promoting economic growth, improving people’s livelihoods and expressed strong support for Cambodia’s endeavor to achieve the status of a high-income country by 2050.

According to the report from Cambodia’s General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), trade between Cambodia and China exceeded $4 billion in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 26 percent rise from the same period last year.

Cambodia’s exports to China totalled $348.19 million, down 4.9 percent year-on-year, while imports from China surged 30.8 percent to $3.72 billion.
