Investors from Hungary urged to explore opportunities in Cambodia

Investors from Hungary have been urged to explore opportunities in the Kingdom’s various economic sectors from agriculture to information technology.

This came as Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly, received Tibor Baloghdi, Ambassador of Hungary to Cambodia, on Tuesday at the National Assembly Palace.

They acknowledged growing economic ties between the two nations, encompassing various segments.

Sudary said Hungarian investments are welcome, particularly in the fields of agriculture, industry, manufacturing, information technology, environmental protection, and water resource management.

“The relationship between the two National Assemblies is of extreme importance, as parliaments represent the voice of the people.

“Strengthening this parliamentary relationship helps foster people-to-people ties, which serve as a solid foundation for broader cooperation across various sectors, including trade, tourism, education, and more,” said Sudary.

Sudary highlighted her upcoming official visit to the European nation in June, and conveyed warm greetings and heartfelt thanks to the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly for the kind invitation to lead a high-level Cambodian parliamentary delegation to Hungary.

“During my visit to Hungary, I will exchange views with Hungarian leaders—both legislative and executive—on promoting and strengthening cooperation in key priority sectors.

“The bilateral economic relations will cover maximum economic sectors. The aim is to foster economic growth and improve the livelihoods and well-being of people in both countries.”

In the current global economic context, strengthening relations between Cambodia and Hungary offers mutual benefits and also supports multilateral cooperation, peace, and shared prosperity.

Cambodia has been in its best efforts to diversify its export and trade patterns after the US President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs on the Kingdom as well as other Asean nations.

Ambassador Baloghdi thanked Sudary and the National Assembly for the warm welcome extended during Deputy Speaker Matrai’s visit, saying she felt a deep emotional connection to Cambodia and its people.

“She was impressed by Cambodia’s rapid development under the leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet,” he said.

The ambassador also shared a tentative programme schedule for Sudary’s visit to Hungary, which will include meetings with parliamentary and government leaders, visits to industrial sites, and engagements with the Cambodian community and students.

He also shed light on many ongoing cooperation projects, particularly in the areas of energy, business, and agriculture, and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing bilateral ties.

Both sides welcomed the upcoming 70th anniversary of Cambodia-Hungary diplomatic relations in 2026, noting the growing momentum of bilateral engagement through frequent exchanges.

Chey Tech, a socio-economic researcher, told Khmer Times that Cambodia and Hungary enjoy good bilateral relations. “Cambodia imports machinery and equipment from Hungary, and also sends students to pursue their studies there based on scholarships.

“Strengthening ties with individual EU member states, such as Hungary, can bring significant benefits with regard to trade ties with larger Europe,” Tech said.

“When we look at Cambodia’s major trade partners, they include the United States, Asean member countries, and the European Union. Therefore, fostering strong relationships within the EU framework is essential for expanding trade and economic cooperation.”
