Cambodia honoured at Global Food Summit for promoting culinary diplomacy

Cambodia’s culinary diplomacy efforts received international recognition last week as Bong Sovath, Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC), accepted the “Special Award of the Jury” for Taste of Angkor 2 at the 30th Gourmand Awards, held during the Cascais World Food Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 18 to 22.

According to an MFAIC statement released on Tuesday, the Cambodian delegation used the platform to promote Khmer cuisine as part of the ministry’s broader economic diplomacy strategy. A representative from the Economic Diplomacy Coordinating Group presented Cambodia’s vision for leveraging gastronomy to boost trade, tourism, and cultural identity abroad.

The delegation also held meetings with international publishers, chefs, writers, and food industry influencers to explore opportunities to expand Cambodia’s culinary footprint globally. Officials noted that showcasing traditional Cambodian dishes on international stages not only promotes culture but also opens avenues for economic engagement in food-related sectors.

The recognition highlights the growing role of soft power in Cambodia’s foreign policy and reflects the government’s continued efforts to use culture and cuisine as tools for strengthening economic ties and international cooperation.
