The Public Works Department has launched a tender for a new central bus station in Larnaca after years of delays and repeated representations from Larnaca Municipality to solve serious traffic problems created in the city centre near Finikoudes.
The project will be built using the Design and Build method and will cost €7 million (plus VAT). The new central bus station will be created on Falirou Street (perpendicular to Makarios Avenue) on a plot with a total area of 9,750 square metres.
The project completion period has been set at 16 months.
According to the design, the project will be implemented in two sections. The first includes widening part of the public road on Falirou Street and constructing a pavement. The second section will involve creating ticket offices, office spaces, a waiting room, canteen, public toilets and staff rest area.
The buildings will be covered by a metal canopy covering 3,100 square metres. The site will include eight bus stops, nine bus parking spaces (covered and uncovered), seven parking spaces for staff, two taxi parking spaces and one parking space for people with disabilities.
Additionally, there will be a maintenance area, storage and temporary taxi boarding/alighting area.
For years, the central bus station in Larnaca has been located near Finikoudes, specifically on a plot next to the Social Insurance offices and Larnaca Police Directorate.
This creates numerous traffic problems in the area, which is why Larnaca authorities have been requesting the creation of a new transfer station for years.
“The construction of Larnaca’s central bus station will contribute to improving passenger service by increasing the use of public passenger transport and consequently will lead to reduced pollution and traffic congestion, as well as passenger comfort and service through the construction of modern building facilities of high aesthetic quality,” the Public Works Department stated in announcing the tender launch.
