Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia and head of the working group for tariff negotiations with the United States, stated that setting the tariff rate on Cambodian goods exported to the United States to 19 percent will enable Cambodia to compete with neighboring countries and all other countries in the region.
This statement was made on the occasion of Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol holding a press conference on the United States’ decision to reduce tariffs on goods exported from Cambodia to the United States to 19% on the morning of August 1, 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol stated, “This 19 percent rate, compared to neighboring countries, at this rate we can compete with all neighboring countries.”
In addition, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol highlighted that with this 19 percent rate, Cambodia will be able to maintain factories in Cambodia and expand existing factories to further develop, as well as attract investors to invest more capital for the benefit of the nation and create jobs for the people.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol said, “Today we have 19 percent. So if you look at the size of the rate of decline, it is down 30 points, but if you compare it as a percentage of decline, it is down 61.2 percent, the largest decline in the world . ”
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol emphasized that the reduction in US tariffs was due to the guidance and direction of President Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and the efforts of the working group to negotiate honestly with the United States.
At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol also called on Cambodian citizens who are working abroad to return to Cambodia because Cambodia can create tens of thousands of jobs for its citizens.
It is worth noting that, under the efforts of the Royal Government under the leadership of President Hun Manet, tariff negotiations with the United States have achieved good results, with US President Donald Trump deciding to reduce the tariff rate for imports from Cambodia from 36% to only 19%.
This new corporate tax rate is a good level to help Cambodia attract more investors to invest in Cambodia and encourage better trade.
