The Royal Railway of Cambodia (RRC) has unveiled its plan for additional investment to improve the northern railroad line, currently out of service.
The company’s representative led by its CEO John Guir presented the business plan in a meeting held on Tuesday with officials of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
The Royal Railway of Cambodia (RRC) manages the railway network in Cambodia and is a subsidiary of the domestic conglomerate Royal Group.
The meeting, held under the presence of Vasim Sorya, the ministry’s Under-Secretary of State, was aimed at discussing the Royal Group’s additional investment project on upgrading the Northern Railway (Phnom Penh-Poipet) to submit a proposal to and approval from the ministry.
Sorya could not be contacted for further details by Wednesday.
According to the ministry’s statement, representatives of Royal Group made a presentation on the background of the current situation, the draft action plan and the budget for the implementation of the project.
“The meeting discussed in detail and suggested to the company to organize a joint technical working group to inspect and study to prepare and revise the project report about the situation and proposal to repair and improve the railroad track, bridges, stations and railroad crossings,” read the statement.
They also discussed an action plan on international passenger and freight service between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as passenger and freight transport along the route from Phnom Penh to Poipet to serve the diversified transport sector, the ministry said.
Royal Railway is the only concession company that provides train services including freight and passenger transport in the country.
The Southern Railroad was built between 1960 and 1969 and has a total length of 264 kilometers. Both lines were severely damaged and partially destroyed during the war.
Currently, both lines are functional and maintained to the highest international safety standards in collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the RRC.
The ministry has previously mentioned its future plan to convert the Northern and Southern Railway Lines into high-speed rail, which he said would allow for speeds of up to 160km/h. khmertimeskh
