Plans are underway for a €50 million mixed-use development project, “Hyperion Limassol,” at Limassol’s historic Old Port.
The project’s centrepiece will be a 36-cabin observation wheel, similar to the London Eye, offering panoramic views from an estimated height of 147 meters above sea level.
The project will be constructed on land created by reclaiming the south side of the Old Port’s breakwater, falling within the administrative boundaries of Limassol Municipality. In addition to the observation wheel, Hyperion Limassol will feature leisure and entertainment spaces, as well as an electronic aquarium.
Public consultation on the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is ongoing until July 12, 2024. Ukrainian entrepreneur Dmytro Lepkov is behind the project.
The EIA is necessary for licensing purposes and will assess the environmental impact of construction and operation. It will also identify measures to mitigate any potential negative effects.
Land reclamation for the project will involve using natural rocky materials from licensed quarries in Parekklisia or Polemidia. The reclaimed area will be protected from wave action by a newly constructed breakwater.
The project site is a bustling and up-and-coming part of Limassol Municipality. It is located near Limassol Marina, Limassol Castle, and the popular Molos Limassol promenade. Public access will be via the eastern breakwater of the Old Port, with connections to existing infrastructure for utilities like electricity, water, and sewage.
Approval for the project hinges on the EIA and licensing by the Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA).
