MoC conducts first meeting for National Cashew Policy 2022-2027

Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce, presided over the first meeting for the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Monitoring and Evaluating the Implementation of the National Cashew Policy 2022-2027.

Nimul, who is also the chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the National Cashew Policy 2022-2027, addressed the first committee meeting attended by vice-chairs and members of the committee at the ministry on Tuesday.

According to the news release posted on its social media, the meeting aimed at announcing the Royal Government Decision No. 16 (dated January 12, 2024) endorsed the indicators and key performance indicators of this policy; and discussed the effective implementation of the National Cashew Policy 2022-2027.

It should be noted that ‘The National Cashew Policy 2022-2027’ has officially been launched to increase the productivity and competitiveness of Cambodia’s cashews, one of the country’s priorities for agro-industrial crops.

The policy was launched in June last year under the presidency of Pan Sorasak, former Minister of Commerce.

With 106 pages, the new policy was aimed at developing cashew production, processing and marketing to be more competitive to ensure sustainability and economic diversification and to transform Cambodia into an important producer and supplier of cashew nuts for local, regional and global markets in the near future.

Cambodia is trying to establish itself as a leading cashew-producing and exporting country through its National Policy on Cashew 2022–2027. The government aims to boost cashew output, develop processing facilities, diversify export markets, and simplify trade facilitation programs, the release said.

By implementing this policy, Cambodia’s processing capacity is expected to increase from 5 percent to 25 percent by 2027 and at least 50 percent by 2032.

Cambodian cashew nut industries require an additional investment of about $329 million to comply with the National Cashew Policy 2022-2027 to develop infrastructure.

According to the report of the Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), Cambodia has become the world’s second-largest producer of raw cashew nuts, with a total production of 830,000 tonnes in the last seven months of 2024.

The report added that there has been a significant increase in cashew exports to Vietnam, amounting to over 780,000 tonnes valued at $1,092 million. This represents a 36.7 percent increase in volume and a 28.1 percent increase in value.
