Ayia Napa sees strongest post-pandemic tourism season this year

The resort town of Ayia Napa is experiencing its strongest post-pandemic tourism season to date, defying expectations of lower arrivals due to Middle East tensions, Mayor Christos Zannettou told local media on Thursday.

All data, including overnight stays, bed occupancy, and wastewater flow, show an increase from 2023, Zannettou said, noting a rise in visitors from both traditional and new markets.

The town has seen increased arrivals from the UKPoland, Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland, and France. Zannettou highlighted a more diverse age range of visitors, including families and older travellers.

While the influx has boosted most hotel and tourism businesses, some in the city centre continue to face viability issues, particularly those near entertainment venues.

Zannettou reported that stricter regulations have led to only isolated incidents of youth misbehaviour this season. “We’ve taken timely actions with the Municipal Police and national police. We cannot tolerate behaviours that have existed in the past,” he said.

The mayor emphasised Ayia Napa’s efforts to maintain its appeal as a destination for all age groups, despite challenges from a small percentage of visitors.
