‘Cyprus must be marketed as peaceful and progressive tourist destination’

President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association (Pasyxe) Thanos Michaelides on Thursday called on tourism professionals to promote peace through high-quality services.

He also encouraged tourism sector stakeholders to present Cyprus as a peaceful and progressive destination ahead of World Tourism Day on September 27.

In his statement, Michaelides stressed the connection between tourism and peace, noting that “tourism can promote peace and understanding between peoples”.

He explained that, as one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global economy, tourism has the ability to unite people from different cultures, religions, and civilisations, fostering mutual respect and cooperation.

This year’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) events will be held under the theme ‘Tourism and Peace’ in Tbilisi, Georgia, to reflect this idea.

Michaelides also pointed out that “for tourism to thrive, it requires peace and stability.”

He also pointed out that recent geopolitical conflicts have created a climate of uncertainty and anxiety, which, in turn, affects travellers, many of whom increasingly make last-minute bookings to ensure safe conditions at their destinations.

However, he reassured that “Cyprus has repeatedly proven that it is a safe and attractive destination”.

The Pasyxe president attributed this to the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders, which have helped maintain tourist confidence.

He also stressed the importance of modernising Cyprus’ tourism marketing strategies, stating that “the rebranding of Cyprus’ tourism product is the cornerstone for our future strategy”.

He called for a more cohesive and proactive approach, especially in using digital campaigns to showcase Cyprus’ unique advantages in key markets.

Reflecting on the broader impact of World Tourism Day 2024, Michaelides said that theme of ‘Tourism and Peace’ stresses “the important contribution that travel and cultural exchanges can make in fostering peace, understanding, and cooperation”.

What is more, Michaelides urged all tourism professionals to continue promoting Cyprus as a peaceful and welcoming destination.

“For Pasyxe, world peace is not only essential for tourism’s prosperity,” he said.

“It is crucial for sustainable and stable development that will benefit future generations,” he concluded.
