Yunnan investors eye agro-processing sector opportunities

A group of investors from China’s Yunnan Province recently toured the Kingdom to explore agro-processing sector opportunities, supported by representatives from the Cambodia Investment Board (CIB) of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).

The delegation led by Liu Jie, deputy-director of the Yunnan Provincial Commerce Department was welcomed at the CDC’s headquarters in Phnom Penh on September 25 by Chea Vuthy, secretary-general of the Cambodia Investment Board (CIB).

Addressing the delegation, Vuthy detailed the potential for the Yunnan investors to consider direct investments in the Kingdom, particularly those related to agricultural product processing leveraging advanced technologies and other value-added methods already established in their native markets. Such investments have the potential to both meet domestic demand and boost International exports, he said.

He gave an elaborate information about the Kingdom’s transparent and predictable investment laws, and incentives for manufacturers offered by the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC). Importantly, Cambodia has inked specific agreements with China to boost bilateral private investment.

Vuthy cited the prior establishment of an ‘Industrial and Technological Corridor’ as well as a ‘Fisheries and Rice Corridor’ to promote trade in technology and goods between the two markets. The CDC also established a specialised ‘China Desk’ in 2023, noted Vuthy, in order to provide advisory services for incoming Chinese investors, easing preliminary research for investments and other assistance.

Outside of representatives from the Chinese agriculture, agro-industry and food production sectors, the delegation also included investors from other sectors such as energy, digital technology, e-commerce and investment consulting services.

The delegation’s lead, Jie, stated that last month’s initial tour would help Yunnan-based investors to properly plan and consider potential investments inside Cambodia in the coming periods, as well as raise more attention towards Sino-Cambodian business potential.
