Internet users in Kingdom surge to 20 million

Cambodia has 20 million internet subscribers both mobile and fixed as of June, an increase of 16.6 million registered in 2020, the year of pandemic, a report of the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia showed on Wednesday.

The report stated that mobile internet users increased to 21.9 million, up 5.2 percent from 20.8 million recorded in 2020.

In Cambodia, there are four mobile internet service providers and 39 internet service providers, stated the report.

There are two submarine fibre optic cables, of which the first submarine fibre cable connects Cambodia to Thailand and Malaysia and the second cable connects Cambodia to 18 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Chhin Ken, President of the Cambodia Digital Tech Association, said on that the increasing number of internet subscribers shows awareness of using digital among Cambodian people to the new technology.

“Cambodian people have started learning new technology and mobile internet surfing is easy for them to work on smartphones before they proceed on computers,” he said.

National Bank of Cambodia Governor Chea Serey has earlier said that mobile payment services had significantly contributed to enhancing financial inclusion, promoting innovation, and providing convenience and safety to users.

The mobile payments in the Kingdom increased to $492 billion in 2023, up 80 percent from $272.8 billion in 2022.

The Kingdom has officially announced the implementation of its ‘Digital Economy and Social Policy Framework of Cambodia 2021-2035’ policy.

The government has a strategy to strengthen and expand mobile infrastructure and high-speed Internet through 4th generation mobile services (4G) to reach the 5th generation mobile services (5G) and promote the construction of fibre-optic infrastructure undersea and high-speed Internet infrastructure to all communes nationwide.
