DPM Samal outlines key tasks to boost Kep tourism

Say Samal, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC), Monday called on the Kep Provincial Administration (KPA) to focus on achieving the objectives of Pentagonal Strategy – Phase One’s vision aimed at expanding accessibility to clean water, electricity and tourism infrastructure.

Addressing a meeting to summarise the achievements of the local government working group of Kep province in nine months of 2024, Samal said, “Since Kep is a potential tourism town, officials at all levels must focus on achieving the objectives of the Pentagonal Strategy – Phase One.”

He said that the development projects in the province must focus on improving the aesthetics of infrastructure which is crucial to the tourism sector.

“In the past, Kep has gradually achieved great results which contributed to the promotion of tourism sectors including the 2,700 meters beach, the tourism port of Rabbit Island, the 12 kilometres of coastal roads that connect Kep resorts to the Angkol Beach, arranging landfills, the cycling project to Koh Kong province, the improvement of the coastal, island and national beaches in the centre of the town.”

Samal asked the relevant departments and specialised units to execute their duties and responsibilities aimed at providing services to the local community and travellers, especially in developing infrastructure, roads, electricity, telecommunication and irrigation systems in the rural areas.

In his remarks, Som Piseth, Governor of Kep Province, committed to continuing close cooperation with relevant authorities to improve the implementation policy of safe villages and communes in the province.

To create a safe atmosphere in the province, the Governor encouraged local citizens to join forces in preventing and reporting crimes in their respective areas, in particular on drug, gangster, rubbery and illegal gambling.

“The local government working group of Kep province will mobilise partners and stakeholders to develop the potential tourism destinations and create more job opportunities for Cambodians,” he said.

KPA will continue to implement priority activities aimed at achieving the government’s vision of becoming a middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050, he added.

Speaking to Khmer Times, Bun Yaung, Deputy Governor of the Provincial Board and Spokesperson of Kep Provincial Administration said, “To boost the tourism sector, the Deputy Prime Minister offered some important gifts to the province and its people.”

“He approved the projects for the development of 2,700 meters beach and the cycling path along the coast while also expressing support to reform the provision of public services, especially in the food and restaurant industry as well as sanitation and standards throughout the town,” the Spokesperson added.

He briefed on KPA’s past performance in leading the relevant departments and units to check and provide guidance on quality standards and service efficiency across the province.

He added that regarding hygiene and aesthetics in private sector cafeterias and restaurants, KPA has been carefully collecting documents and food prices from local food shops, aiming to set a new standard to meet the demand of national and international tourists.
