The National Observatory of Cyprus has been named a finalist at the 2024 World Architecture Festival in Singapore, competing against projects by leading firms including Zaha Hadid Architects and Foster + Partners.
Designed by Cypriot practice Kyriakos Tsolakis Architects, the observatory in Agridia village will be presented in the ‘Completed Projects’ category by partner Elena K. Tsolakis at the three-day event starting 6 November.
The EU-funded facility, also known as Troodos Observatory, houses two advanced telescopes for night and solar observation, alongside an astromarina for amateur astronomers. Its reflective exterior was designed to blend with the mountainous landscape.
The project aims to boost the local economy while promoting scientific education, according to the architects. The family-run firm, founded by Kyriakos Tsolakis and now led by his children, Elena, Nicodemos and Cassandra, maintains offices in Cyprus with an international portfolio.
The World Architecture Festival, now in its 17th year, is the industry’s largest global awards programme.
