Koh Ker, a remote temple complex in Cambodia, has been the only Southeast Asian representative on Fodor’s Travel’s list of 25 must-visit destinations for 2025.
“Keen to avoid the selfie stick-wielding tourists flocking to Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples? Consider Koh Ker, a sprawling archaeological site that provides a fascinating insight into lesser-known aspects of the Khmer empire,” the American travel magazine wrote.
Located in Preah Vihear province, around 100 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap, Koh Ker served as the capital of the Khmer Empire in the 10th century.
The site features 80 temples, many hidden within dense jungles. Among its highlights is Prasat Thom, Asia’s only seven-tiered pyramid-shaped temple, which sits on a 55-square-meter base and rises 30 meters above the plain.
Koh Ker was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in late 2023.
Fodor’s Travel’s 2025 Go List includes 25 destinations that are slightly off the beaten path but promise adventure and delight.
Asia is represented by three destinations: Koh Ker in Cambodia, Meghalaya in India, and Nikko City in Japan.
Europe has five entries on the list: Camargue in France, Helsinki in Finland, Meteora in Greece, Masurian Lake District in Poland, and Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland.
The U.S. also has five representatives: Badlands National Park in South Dakota, Houston in Texas, Las Vegas in Nevada, Los Olivos in California, and Michigan’s Beach Towns.
