Government employment in Cyprus reached 55,243 people in November, according to the latest data from the state’s statistical service.
This represents an increase compared to the average government workforce of 54,229 during the January–November 2024 period.
That figure marked a rise of 1,698 employees, corresponding to an increase of 3.2 per cent, from the same timeframe in 2023.
The increase was largely attributed to the growth of temporary staff within the educational service.
This growth in staff members followed the elimination of the service purchase system in support programmes under the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth, implemented at the start of the 2023–2024 academic year.
In November 2024, the public service primarily employed permanent staff, who made up 51.5 per cent of its workforce.
Those on fixed-term contracts represented the smallest group, accounting for only 5.5 per cent.
The educational service also relied heavily on permanent employees, with 68.8 per cent of its workforce falling into this category.
In contrast, hourly wage staff made up just 0.8 per cent, highlighting the minimal use of this employment type in education.
Meanwhile, the security forces showed a similar trend, with 60.2 per cent of their staff holding permanent positions.
Finally, fixed-term employees were the least represented group, comprising only 2.1 per cent of the workforce.
