A US military assessment team will be in Cyprus this week as part of defense upgrades, a Cypriot government spokesperson announced Tuesday.
In his announcement, Konstantinos Letymbiotis stressed that deepening military cooperation with allied forces contributes decisively to the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
The Germany-based American military assessment team will visit the “Andreas Papandreou” Air Base in Paphos to provide expertise and recommendations on new infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing interoperability with the US and other partners, according to the Cypriot government spokesman.
He added that the assessment will focus on areas such as airport operations, logistics, and communications, supporting the modernization and enhancement of Cyprus’ defense capabilities.
“The upgrading of infrastructure, the supply of modern means and the investment in training are key pillars of our national strategy for an effective and flexible defense,” Letymbiotis told a news briefing.
Strategically perched on the edge of the volatile Middle East, EU member Cyprus has played a central role in evacuating civilians from the region during the many flare-ups in tensions.
Last year, Cyprus established a humanitarian aid corridor to Gaza, where a ceasefire deal came into effect on Sunday.
Relations between the US and Cyprus have grown closer in recent years.
