Cyprus is heading towards a double record in tourist arrivals and tourism revenues, according to a variety of statistics published by CySTAT, and so this perhaps the perfect time to consider how much visitors to the island are spending here.
Based on the latest data announced, tourism revenues in the January-September period of 2024 increased by 4.9% compared to the corresponding period last year, while compared to the first nine months of 2022 they increased by 31%.
More specifically, and based on the results of the traveler survey, tourism revenues in September 2024 amounted to €454.1 million, showing an increase of 6.0% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year (€428.4 million).
For the period January-September 2024, tourism revenue is estimated at €2,575.9 million compared to €2,456.1 million in the corresponding period of 2023, marking an increase of 4.9%.
Based on the same data, in September visitors from Israel spent the most money on each day they stayed in Cyprus, while overall for the number of days they were in our country, the Dutch spent more money.
In more detail, the daily expenditure of tourists from Israel amounted to €150.63 and the per capita expenditure of the Dutch visitors amounted to €1,287.52 for the duration of their stay in Cyprus.
Also, according to the same data, the tourists who stayed in Cyprus for the most days came from Greece (11.6 days) and the Netherlands (11.1 days).
What do the ‘Big Five’ spend?
Regarding the five main players in tourism this year, visitors from Israel spend the most money and Greeks the least.
In more detail, the daily expenditure of tourists from the United Kingdom – the main tourist market -, who stayed in Cyprus for an average of 10.2 days, amounted to €112.35 in September and their total per capita expenditure to €1,145.96 for the duration of their stay.
At the same time, the daily expenditure of tourists from Israel, who stayed in Cyprus for an average of 4.6 days, amounted to €150.63 and the total per capita expenditure to €692.90 for their entire stay.
At the same time, the daily expenditure of tourists from Poland, who on average stayed in Cyprus for 6.9 days, amounted to €88.96 in September and the total per capita expenditure to €613.84.
As for tourists from Germany, who on average stayed in the country for 9.1 days, their daily expenditure amounted to €104.69 and the total per capita expenditure to €952.70 for the entire duration of their stay.
Regarding tourists from Greece, who stayed in Cyprus for an average of 11.6 days, their daily expenditure in September amounted to €40.78 and the total per capita expenditure to €473.01.
