Aegean reports 9 per cent passenger growth, announces new routes

Aegean Airlines on Tuesday reported a strong start to 2025, carrying 1.9 million passengers in the first two months of the year, marking a 9 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The airline also announced ambitious expansion plans, offering 1.8 million additional seats in 2025, bringing the total available seats to over 21.5 million.

Passenger traffic in January and February 2025 saw notable growth, with a 13 per cent increase in international travellers and a 3 per cent rise in domestic passengers.

Despite the traditionally weaker demand during the winter months, Aegean maintained load factors at the same levels as the previous year.

In 2024, Aegean recorded its highest annual passenger traffic, carrying 16.3 million passengers—a 6 per cent increase from 2023—despite operational and geopolitical challenges.

The airline offered over 19.7 million seats in 2024, an increase of 1.1 million compared to the previous year.

For 2025, Aegean said that it is continuing its growth strategy by expanding its network.

The airline plans to offer approximately 13 million seats in the international sector, an increase of 1.4 million from 2024, while its domestic network will see a 6 per cent rise in available seats, reaching 8.5 million.

Aegean also said that it is significantly enhancing its presence in the Turkish market, launching new direct flights from Heraklion, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Santorini to Istanbul.

The airline is also introducing new direct routes from Athens to Erbil (Iraq) and Baku (Azerbaijan), as well as a new summer season connection between Larnaca and Rome.

Further expansions are planned for key regions, including the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkans (Albania and Bulgaria), Egypt, and Switzerland.

Additionally, Aegean is strengthening its investment in routes to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco.

Domestically, Aegean said that it is expanding with seven new direct routes within Greece.

Four new connections from Heraklion will link the city with Rhodes, Naxos, Corfu, and Kos.

Finally, Rhodes will gain direct flights to Chania and Santorini, while Thessaloniki will now have a direct connection to Syros.
