Alexis Vafeades: Contractors will be in place at Larnaca marina ‘in about a year’

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades has said contractors will be in place to continue specefic works at Larnaca marina “in about a year.”

These contractors, the Minister continued, will be responsible for implementing specific short-term reconstruction projects selected to continue.

Speaking on Ant1’s midday news show on 27 August, Vafeades mentioned that a meeting was recently held with the relevant ad hoc committee, during which the next steps were concluded, namely the separation of short-term projects from those that would be carried out in the longer-term.

As he indicated, the short-term projects include the construction of the yacht club and the configuration of the land area that will connect the yacht club with Phoinikoudes, so that the public can easily get to the marina

“These are moving ahead very quickly to be delivered to the public as soon as possible”, he underlined, stressing that at the same time that it has been decided to entrust experts with a study on the possible expansion or any other modification of the port and marina, in order for it to meet the needs of the country for the next 50 years.

Asked about when the works will start, Alexis Vafeades expressed the assessment that the architectural competition for the building of the nautical club and the required landscaping will begin immediately.

As he noted, for this purpose he will have a meeting with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) on 6 September.

“ETEK moves fast, I expect to have results by the end of the year or in January and then we will see what process we will proceed with. There is a thought to assign it to the Municipality of Larnaca or for the Department of Public Works to undertake it,” he explained.

Concluding, Vafeades expressed the estimate that there would be contractors at the marina in a year from now.

“We have stated some timelines, which we have committed to, with the ad hoc committee, confirming by September, but I expect that in about a year we will have contractors moving in,” he said, indicating that the process for appointing a contractor takes about six months.
