Ayia Napa, Protaras join forces to boost tourism

A joint promotional campaign, “Live Unforgettable Moments,” launched in August, seeks to attract visitors from key markets such as the United Kingdom, Scandinavian countries, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and France. Leveraging innovative online platforms, the campaign aims to captivate potential travellers and showcase the unique offerings of the region.

The campaign is the result of a long-standing effort by the Cyprus Hotels Association of Famagusta (PASYXE) to bridge the divide between the two municipalities, which had previously been characterised by rivalry and competition. “We have been striving for quite some time to normalise relations and foster collaboration,” stated Panagiotis Konstantinou, President of PASYXE Famagusta.

The joint promotion initiative represents a groundbreaking development, according to Christos Zannettou, President of the Famagusta Tourism and Development Company (ETAP) and Mayor of Ayia Napa. “This is a pivotal step in elevating the tourism profile of the Famagusta region,” he remarked. “By uniting our efforts, we can create a more compelling and distinctive destination.”

Giorgos Nikolettos, Mayor of Paralimni-Deryneia, hailed the move as a historic moment. “This partnership demonstrates our commitment to collective progress and underscores the power of unity,” he said.

The destinations have ambitious plans to invest in specialised forms of tourism, including sports, gastronomic, and romantic tourism. By diversifying their offerings, Ayia Napa and Protaras aim to cater to a wider range of traveller preferences and extend the tourist season.

Furthermore, the destinations are actively pursuing winter tourism to mitigate the impact of seasonality. A tour programme targeting long-stay tourists, primarily from Scandinavian countries, will be launched in November.

The programme will feature a curated itinerary of tours, visits to attractions, and immersive experiences that showcase the region’s cultural heritage, natural beauty, and local traditions.
