Beach cleaning initiative addressing littering launched in Larnaca

The Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP) has launched a major beach cleaning initiative in response to tourist complaints about litter on the city’s beaches, officials said on Tuesday.

ETAP, in collaboration with Larnaca Municipality and hotels in the Pyla tourist area, and supported by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, has engaged a specialist team to clean the sand on main beaches. The campaign, which began in key areas including Pyla, Finikoudes, Medieval Castle, Castella, T. Mitsopoulos Street beach, and Mackenzie, will continue until early September.

Oroklini beaches were not included in the initiative as the former Community Council had already arranged for their cleaning under an existing contract.

ETAP highlighted its ongoing investments to enhance beach appeal and amenities. These include ‘greening’ projects, installation of open-air gym equipment and wooden playgrounds, and development of sports infrastructure such as beach volley and beach soccer fields.

ETAP recently installed a coastal calisthenics park at Castella Beach and has begun refurbishing the Boules/Petanque pitches at Foinikoudes, popular among Scandinavian and French visitors.

“These initiatives are designed to bolster the attractiveness of the beaches, which play a pivotal role in the Larnaca tourist experience, especially during the summer,” ETAP said.
