Senate President Hun Sen recently called for steps to further strengthen economic ties between Cambodia and Malaysia even as he expressed satisfaction with the growth of investment from Malaysia and the bilateral trade volume, especially Malaysia’s purchase of rice from Cambodia.
Mr Hun Sen said this when he received a courtesy visit from Shaharuddin Onn, Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, on June 17 at the Senate Palace.
The Senate President hoped that the ambassador would continue to promote Cambodia-Malaysia bilateral relations.
“I am pleased with the growth of investment from Malaysia and the bilateral trade volume, especially the export of rice from Cambodia, which helped Cambodian farmers to grow more rice and support Malaysia’s food security,” Mr Hun Sen wrote on social media.
At the same time, the Senate President sought to improve the movement of goods between the Sihanoukville port and the Malaysian ports.
In March last year, Mr Hun Sen and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussed laying submarine cables across the Malaysian seabed to transmit electricity from Cambodia to Singapore.
“This will ensure energy security for both Malaysia and ASEAN,” he noted.
“Malaysia buys rice from Cambodia and Cambodia buys palm oil from Malaysia and this is mutually beneficial,” Mr Hun Sen said.

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia, Shaharuddin Onn, congratulated Mr Hun Sen on his election as President of the Senate.
He recalled Mr Hun Sen’s great achievements, including the establishment of peace in Cambodia. “Mr Hun Sen transformed Cambodia from a poor country to a developing country,” the ambassador noted.
The ambassador praised the government-to-government tie-up as well as the people-to-people contact between the two countries.
The Senate President and the Malaysian Ambassador also discussed strengthening the halal food industry. Mr Hun Sen wanted to see the halal industry succeed in Cambodia.
On the occasion, Ambassador Shaharuddin invited Mr Hun Sen to visit Malaysia. The Senate President accepted the invitation and he will visit Malaysia at a suitable time.

During Prime Minister Hun Manet’s visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar in February, Mr Hun Manet and his Malaysian counterpart agreed to further bolster economic cooperation and considered the possibility of establishing a joint trade committee.
“On the economic front, our bilateral trade shows a promising upward trend but there are still untapped potentials to further bolster the partnership. We will encourage our respective private sectors in fostering collaborations,” said the Prime Minister at that time.
The bilateral trade between the two countries stood at $632 million in 2023, a General Department of Customs and Excise report showed.
