Phnom Penh, 21 December 2024: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that Cambodia has been elected to the Organizational Committee of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (OCPBC) for the 2025-2026 term. This decision was made during the 54th Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on 19 December 2024, in New York.
This election marks an important milestone for Cambodia, underscoring the nation’s dedication to global peace, stability, and sustainable development. The Peacebuilding Commission, serving as an advisory body to the UN, assists countries transitioning from conflict to peace. Cambodia’s election highlights the international community’s confidence in the Royal Government’s leadership and its expanding role in international diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts.
Cambodia has been a consistent advocate for peace, significantly contributing to global peacekeeping operations. Since 2006, the country has deployed over 9,000 personnel to 11 United Nations peacekeeping missions, including more than 800 women, and ranks 25th globally for its peacekeeper contributions.
Reflecting on its own journey from conflict to peace after the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia offers valuable insights into national reconciliation and peacebuilding.
As Cambodia assumes this important role, it reaffirms its commitment to the principles of the United Nations, aiming to actively contribute to global peacebuilding efforts and foster a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous future for all.
