The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction has announced a significant expansion of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, including the development of a modern deep-water container terminal.
The project, funded through concessional loans from the Japanese government, is scheduled for completion in three phases between 2023 and 2030, according to a ministry statement issued yesterday.
Once fully operational, the upgraded port will be able to handle container vessels of up to 160,000 deadweight tonnes (15,000 TEUs). This expansion will enable direct international shipping to Cambodia, removing current depth limitations that often require cargo to be transshipped.
The ministry said that a dedicated working group, in cooperation with the Sihanoukville Provincial Administration, has been assigned to inspect and identify residents and structures within the development zone to facilitate construction.
The deep-water terminal is a cornerstone of Cambodia’s strategy to enhance maritime capacity, reduce logistics costs, and position Sihanoukville as a leading logistics hub in Southeast Asia. AKP
