Cambodia launches payment app for int’l tourists

Cambodia launched a payment system on Monday to enable tourists to pay at 3.3 million retail shops across Cambodia.

Speaking at the launching ceremony in the northwestern province of Siem Reap, Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said the app will facilitate international tourists’ payments, contributing to boosting the tourism sector.

The app will promote the tourism sector in Cambodia by providing an electronic means of payment, enabling international tourists to make payments for goods and services efficiently and conveniently, said the chief of Cambodia’s central bank.

Upon arrival, international tourists must install the Bakong Tourists App on their mobile phones and register using an email to create an account.

“International tourists can top up their accounts and make payment transactions by scanning the KHQR Code with approximately 3.3 million retail merchants within Cambodia,” she added.

Tourism is one of the key drivers supporting Cambodia’s economy, along with the garment, footwear, travel goods, agriculture, construction, and real estate sectors.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the Kingdom has seen a significant increase in international tourists, with 3.16 million visitors in the first six months, up nearly 23% from the same period last year, a promising sign for the future of Cambodia’s tourism sector.

The Kingdom of Cambodia welcomes a diverse range of international tourists, with the five largest sources being Thailand, Vietnam, China, Laos, and the United States, reflecting the global appeal of Cambodia’s tourism sector. AKP
