Cambodia is experiencing a significant surge in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) with a total of 3,676 units of electric cars, electric scooters and electric three-wheelers registered as of August 2024, said Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport.
The minister made this announcement during a dissemination workshop on National Policy on EV Development 2024-2030 held yesterday.
“The increase in the use of electric vehicles in Cambodia has been accompanied by the development of the electric vehicle sector within the framework of the global trend that is accelerating remarkably fast,” Ponea said.
The three most popular EV brands in Cambodia are China’s BYD, Japan’s Toyota and America’s Tesla, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
The number of EVs is still small compared to the number of registered vehicles used in the country.
Currently, there are more than 7 million vehicles and motors registered. 85 percent of which are motors, 10 percent are vehicles, and the rest are transport vehicles.
The ministry has been working to implement the necessary directions and measures set by the Royal Cambodian government in accordance with the long-term development strategy with carbon neutral to promote the use of electric vehicles at 40 percent and electric motorcycles at 70 percent by 2050, the minister said.
The national policy on the development of the electric vehicle sector 2024-2030 is in line with the regional and global trends of rapid development in the electric vehicle sector, he said.
“This national policy will serve as a road map and an effective driving force for the investment orientation, promotion, use, and development of the electric vehicle ecosystem,” Ponea said.
The electric vehicle sector is identified as one of the sectors with high potential to contribute not only to the improvement of the environment and the improvement of public welfare but also to the momentum of economic and economic base diversification and strengthening energy security.
Promoting the use of electric vehicles is a significant contribution to reducing the impact caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fuel-efficient vehicles.
The government aims to increase the number of electric vehicles in its inventory to 30,000 by 2030.
