Cambodia sees record high air passengers in 2024

Cambodia’s three international airports handled a combined 5.65 million air passengers in 2024, up 39.8 percent from 4.04 million a year before, a report from the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) showed.

Cambodia has three international airports: Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, and Sihanoukville International Airport.

The year 2024 saw a remarkable increase in air travellers, direct flight and airlines expanding flights to and from Cambodia, said Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.

“Air travellers in 2024 reached 5.6 million, and it is expected that by 2025, the number of air travelers will increase to over 7 million per year,” Havannall said.

Currently, 30 airlines operate direct flights from eight ASEAN countries, Mainland China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to the Kingdom.

The aviation sector in Cambodia has been experiencing steady growth in recent years, driven by increased demand for air travel and government initiatives to modernise the country’s airport infrastructure.

Under the open sky policy, the Cambodian government’s efforts to improve airport infrastructure and enhance aviation services have also contributed to the sector’s growth.

Cambodia is adding new flight routes and expanding its aviation sector to boost tourism and air connectivity.

The efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and other parties in promoting the tourism sector and attracting foreign tourists were also factors in boosting air passenger growth, Havannall said.

Cambodia attracted 6 million international tourists during the first 11 months of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 22 percent, a report released by the Ministry of Tourism showed.

As many as 2.15 million foreign visitors, or about 35.9 percent of the total foreign tourist arrivals, travelled to Cambodia by air, a year-on-year increase of 28.6 percent, read the report.
