Cambodia’s foreign trade up 16.5% in Jan-Aug period

Cambodia’s international trade volume reached $36.48 billion in the first eight months of this year, up 16.5% from $31.32 billion over the same period last year, said an official report released on Tuesday.

The Kingdom’s total exports amounted to $17.58 billion during the January to August period, a year-on-year increase of 16.7%, and total imports were valued at $18.9 billion, up 16.2%, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise’s report.

China remained the top trading partner Cambodia during the period, followed by the United States, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan, the report showed.

Cambodian Ministry of Commerce’s Secretary of State and Spokesperson Penn Sovicheat said the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) had been a driving force for this trade growth.

“With tariff concessions provided by the RCEP and the CCFTA, our exports will undoubtedly continue to grow in coming months and years,” he told Xinhua.

RCEP comprises 15 Asia-Pacific countries, including 10 ASEAN member states – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and their five trading partners: China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Xinhua
