Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis described the completion of the audit and report by foreign experts on the upgrade of the ship ‘Prometheus’ as a critical step in the implementation of the Government’s strategy to reduce the cost of electricity.
In statements on 21 January, the Spokesperson said that the inspection and report of foreign experts on the upgrade of the ship ‘Prometheus’ has been completed, a development that marks a crucial step in the implementation of our strategy for reducing the cost of electricity in our country.
Based on the report, the necessary actions that must be taken are reflected so that the ship can receive the necessary
Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) certification and operate in an efficient, safe and compliant manner with international standards.
The evaluation of the work proposed by the experts, as he explained, will allow both the timetable and the cost of completing the upgrade to be accurately determined.
The next phase includes the expression of interest, which the Natural Gas Infrastructure Company (ETYFA) will proceed with in order to complete the certification of the ship.
According to Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the completion of the conversion of the ‘Prometheus’ into a floating gas re-liquefaction unit (FSRU) is not simply a technological undertaking, but at the same time, it is inextricably linked to the central pillar of the Government’s energy policy, which concerns the creation of a reliable natural gas terminal, capable of offering our citizens cheaper electricity and at the same time contributing to the upgrading of Cyprus’ role in the broader regional energy map.
At the same time, as he mentioned, the Government is in the final stages of awarding the bid to a project manager for the completion of the terminal work in Vasilikos.
“With determination and dedication, we will continue to work with our central goal of providing households and businesses with access to cheaper electricity,” emphasised the Government Spokesperson.
