The Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, Giorgos Papanastasiou, and the new Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt, Karim Badawi, have discussed, ways to cooperate to expedite the utilization of natural gas discoveries in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
An official press release said Badawi’s visit to Cyprus took place following an invitation from Papanastasiou, aimed at the first exchange of views between the two Ministers.
During the 29 August meeting of delegations from the two countries, chaired by the two Ministers, they discussed international and regional developments in the energy sector and confirmed the need for further strengthening of cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, with the goal of creating a reliable energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe for the transportation of natural gas and green energy.
Additionally, they examined ways to accelerate the development of Cyprus’s natural gas fields, utilizing Egypt’s existing infrastructure and transferring gas from the Cypriot EEZ to Egypt for liquefaction and export to international markets, as one of the main options for their exploitation.
