Cyprus and Japan explore hi tech cooperation

Representatives of Cyprus’ Research and Innovation Foundation (RFI) and of the Japan Science and Technology Organisation (JST) recently met in Nicosia, to establish collaborations in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, energy, space research, and biotechnology.

The RFI was represented at the meeting by its Chief Scientist, Demetris Skourides and Director General Theodoros Loukaides, while JST was represented by its President, Kazuhito Hashimoto. The Japanese Ambassador, Yoshio Yamawaki, was also present.

Skourides spoke about the strategic vision and significant progress in innovation, as seen in the European Innovation Scoreboard. He credited this success to smart policies, strong funding programmes from the RIF, and supportive government incentives.

These efforts had strengthened Cyprus’ research infrastructure, leading to more innovative activities among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Skourides also said that Cyprus excelled in research publications, especially those resulting from collaborations between public research organisations and private companies, and in promoting partnerships between innovative firms.

Loukaides then showcased some of the innovation and development programmes offered by the Foundation, which are designed to create a thriving research and innovation ecosystem.

Hashimoto and his team showed great interest in Cyprus’ efforts.  The meeting was crucial in identifying specific areas for collaboration in research and innovation, said a press release issued by the RFI, which added that this demonstrated the strong commitment of both countries to foster cooperation in these fields.

This potential partnership was a key step in Cyprus’ strategic vision to become a hub for research and innovation. It also aligned with the country’s efforts to boost its geostrategic position, digital skills, and energy infrastructure, said the RFI.

The press release also mentioned the successful Cyprus-Japan Business Forum held earlier this year, highlighting the growing economic cooperation.
