Cyprus eyes stronger trade ties with Qatar at Doha economic forum

Minister of Energy George Papanastasiou travelled to Doha this week to represent President Nikos Christodoulides at the Qatar Economic Forum, taking place from May 20 to 22.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, Papanastasiou met on Tuesday with Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Sheikh Faisal Thani Al Thani, on the sidelines of the forum’s opening.

The two discussed prospects for strengthening economic relations between the two countries and explored ways to enhance cooperation between their respective business communities.

One of the key points raised, the statement said, was the possibility of launching joint initiatives to promote business-to-business engagement.

Sheikh Faisal reportedly conveyed Qatar’s readiness to work more closely with Cyprus.

On his part, Papanastasiou noted the ministry’s intention, through the Cyprus Trade Centre in Dubai, to organise a business delegation to Qatar in the second half of 2025.

The minister is expected to continue high-level meetings on Wednesday, including talks with the leadership of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as the Qatari Businessmen Association.

Finally, the announcement said that Papanastasiou is due to return to Cyprus on Thursday.
