Cyprus Independence Day 1st October

Cyprus Independence Day 1st October

Message from His Excellency Salah Essa, Honorary Consul of Cyprus to Cambodia

On the auspicious occasion of Cyprus’s 64th Independence Day, I extend my warmest greetings to the government and people of Cambodia, and to all friends of Cyprus residing here. This significant milestone is not only a celebration of our rich history, diverse culture, and resilient spirit but also an opportunity to reflect on the strengthening ties between Cyprus and Cambodia.

Despite the geographical distance, our two nations have been fostering a growing relationship since establishing diplomatic relations on May 16, 2000. In recent years, we have been working diligently to expand cooperation across various sectors, laying the groundwork for a fruitful partnership.

This includes the establishment of a sister city alliance between Phnom Penh and Larnaca, a vibrant city in the Republic of Cyprus. On 13 October 2022, Phnom Penh Governor H.E. Khuong Sreng and Mr. Andreas Vyras, Governor of Larnaca, officially signed a goodwill letter to formalize this alliance aimed at promoting smart city development.

Economically, we have witnessed encouraging developments. The establishment of the Cyprus-Cambodia Business Association in April 2023 by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry marks a significant step toward promoting and expanding business relations between our countries. This initiative aims to organize business delegations and provide networking opportunities for entrepreneurs, fostering greater economic collaboration.

Last year, a high-ranking delegation from Cyprus visited Cambodia to explore business opportunities, highlighting our commitment to strengthening economic ties. We see immense potential in sectors such as trade and investment, education, tourism, and real estate. Cyprus, with its favorable tax regime, robust legal framework, and skilled workforce, presents an ideal destination for Cambodian entrepreneurs and investors.

In the realm of education, Cyprus offers a world-class system with universities renowned for academic excellence and a multicultural environment. We are keen to develop educational exchanges and collaborations, providing opportunities for Cambodian students to experience our dynamic academic landscape. Scholarship opportunities exist to make Cypriot education more accessible to deserving Cambodian students.

Tourism is another area ripe for mutual exploration. Cyprus, known as the Mediterranean gem, boasts stunning coastlines, breathtaking mountain ranges, and a temperate climate. Our island’s rich cultural heritage—reflected in archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, and medieval castles—offers a unique experience for travelers. We warmly invite the people of Cambodia to visit Cyprus and discover the captivating charm that our nation offers.

This year’s Independence Day festivities in Cyprus focus on cultural harmony, reflecting our commitment to unity and shared heritage. Traditional foods like souvla, halloumi, and mezze are more than culinary delights—they are symbols of our communal spirit and hospitality. These celebrations embody the Cypriot love for family, friends, and community—values that resonate deeply with the Cambodian people.

As we honor our past and embrace the future with optimism, Cyprus remains committed to being a beacon of resilience, peace, and cultural diversity. We look forward to strengthening the bonds between our nations, exploring new horizons of partnership, and building bridges of friendship and collaboration.

May this Independence Day inspire us all to work toward a shared vision of prosperity and mutual respect.

Warm regards,

His Excellency Salah Essa

Honorary Consul of Cyprus to Cambodia
