Cyprus leads EU in aeroplane use

Cyprus leads the EU in aeroplane use, according to Eurostat data published on the occasion of the European Mobility Week.

The data show Cyprus has a high reliance on air travel, with 23.2% of passenger kilometres attributed to this mode of transport.

Air transport has seen a notable increase EU-wide, rising by 6% compared to the previous year to reach 13.1% of total passenger kilometres.

However, car transport remains the dominant mode of transportation across the EU, accounting for 72.2% of total passenger kilometres in 2022.

While cars dominate in most EU countries, Lithuania, Finland, and the Netherlands have the highest shares of car transport. Croatia, Bulgaria, and Cyprus lead in air transport, while Malta, Ireland, and Hungary excel in bus and coach transport. Austria, the Netherlands, and Sweden are top performers in rail transport, and Croatia, Estonia, and Finland dominate maritime transport.

The European Mobility Week celebrated annually from September 16 to 22, aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and encourage a shift towards public transport and other eco-friendly options.
