Vehicle registrations in Cyprus rose by 9.1 per cent in 2024, reaching 49,616 compared to 45,494 in 2023, according to the state’s statistical service.
Electric vehicles accounted for 4.0 per cent of registrations, up from 2.7 per cent in 2023, while hybrid vehicles grew to 37.1 per cent from 29.6 per cent.
Passenger saloon car registrations increased by 4.9 per cent, totalling 38,410 compared to 36,608 in 2023. Among these, 39.2 per cent were new cars, while 60.8 per cent were used.
Rental car registrations saw a notable decline of 30.0 per cent, dropping to 3,904.
Petrol-powered saloon cars represented 48.6 per cent of total registrations, down from 57.5 per cent in 2023.
In contrast, diesel vehicles edged up to 10.3 per cent, electric cars grew to 4.0 per cent, and hybrids increased to 37.1 per cent.
Freight vehicle registrations saw a robust rise of 32.9 per cent, reaching 5,811 in 2024, compared to 4,374 the year before.
Light trucks increased by 36.1 per cent to 4,638, heavy trucks by 30.1 per cent to 695, and road tractors (tow trucks) surged by 54.8 per cent to 243.
However, rental freight vehicles fell by 14.2 per cent to 235.
Motorcycle registrations also climbed, with mopeds under 50cc doubling to 690, compared to 321 in 2023. Motorcycles above 50cc rose by 17.4 per cent to 3,903, up from 3,324.
Japan remained the dominant vehicle exporter to Cyprus, accounting for 40.6 per cent of registrations, followed by Germany (13.9 per cent), the UK (6.7 per cent), France (6.5 per cent), and South Korea (4.2 per cent).
The most popular vehicle colour was white, comprising 36.6 per cent of registrations, followed by grey (19.9 per cent), black (14.8 per cent), blue (8.9 per cent), and silver (7.4 per cent).
Meanwhile, vehicle registrations declined by 5.3 per cent to 2,836 in December 2024, when compared to 2,994 in December 2023.
Passenger saloon cars recorded a 16.9 per cent decrease during the same month, falling to 2,050 from 2,468 in December 2023.
Brand preferences
According to the statistical service, Toyota led the market with 6,920 registrations, outpacing Mazda (4,522), Nissan (3,515), Kia (2,398), and Mercedes (2,290), which rounded out the top five.
The list of top brands also included BMW with 2,061 registrations, Volkswagen (1,801), Hyundai (1,375), Honda (1,084), and Audi (925), completing the top ten.
In terms of new saloon cars, Kia led the segment with 2,273 new registrations, followed by Toyota (1,446), Volkswagen (1,430), Nissan (1,412), and Hyundai (1,265) among the top performers.
Elsewhere, Toyota dominated the used car segment with 5,474 registrations, followed by Mazda with 4,387. Other significant numbers were posted by Nissan (2,103), Mercedes (1,649), and BMW (1,355).
Finally, the used car market also saw substantial figures from Honda (943), Land Rover (582), Suzuki (488), Volkswagen (371), and Audi (353).
