Cyprus is set to intensify its appeal to Chinese tourists, aiming to secure a greater share of one of the world’s largest outbound travel markets, Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis said this week.
This announcement came during a strategic dialogue with a visiting delegation from Shanghai, led by Fumo Ji, the Athens-based General Manager of Juneyao Airlines.
The engagement is part of a broader initiative designed to cultivate the Chinese tourism sector and will continue with various activities until January 11.
Koumis expressed confidence in the burgeoning partnerships that are expected to invigorate Cyprus’ tourism sector.
He recalled that China’s global tourism footprint pre-pandemic exceeded 120 million annually, with Europe attracting 13 million of those travellers.
Despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic, there are signs of a robust recovery, and Koumis is optimistic that figures could return to pre-pandemic levels soon, potentially increasing Europe’s share of Chinese travellers.
“Building on this momentum, we aim to position Cyprus as a top choice for Chinese tourists through enhanced partnerships and targeted promotional efforts,” Koumis said.
He also noted that “the timing is strategic, coinciding with Chinese national holidays in February, May, and October—peak travel periods for Chinese tourists.”
Juneyao Airlines, which is part of the Star Alliance and operates flights connecting Shanghai with several European cities, including Athens, is seen as a pivotal link in this strategy.
The Cypriot Ministry of Tourism hopes to capitalise on these routes to encourage Chinese tourists to consider Cyprus as part of their European travel plans.
During their visit, the Chinese delegation will explore Cyprus through a comprehensive itinerary that highlights the island’s rich cultural heritage and key attractions.
This includes visits to major historical sites and experiences that showcase Cyprus’ renowned culinary and wine culture, offering guests a taste of authentic Cypriot hospitality.
