Domestic consumption of rubber latex soars

Synopsis: The significant rise is primarily attributed to the growing demand for raw rubber latex from several tire manufacturing factories operating in the Kingdom.

Domestic consumption of rubber latex in Cambodia surged to 85,000 tonnes in the first six months of 2025, marking a remarkable 92 percent increase compared to the entirety of 2024, according to an official report.

This significant rise is primarily attributed to the growing demand for raw rubber latex from several tire manufacturing factories operating within the Kingdom.

A report released by the General Directorate of Rubber showed that from January to June, Cambodia produced around 141,885 tonnes of rubber latex, a slight decrease of 141 tonnes or by 0.10 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

During the same period, Cambodia exported 112,595 tonnes of rubber latex, a decrease of 28,058 tons or 19.95 percent, worth $208.6 million, read the report.

Another 53,361 tonnes of rubber latex were sold to the domestic market, worth $93.5 million, added the report. “Domestic consumption of rubber latex increased by 92 percent or 85,000 tons compared to the entire year 2024,” Khun Kakada, Acting Director-General of the General Directorate of Rubber, said in the report.

As of June, the average price of rubber sold was $1,613 per ton, a decrease of $25 per ton or 1.52 percent compared to June 2024.

The Kingdom exports the commodity mainly to Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and China.

Lim Heng, Vice President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce lauded the trend of domestic consumption. “This shows the successful efforts to attract and establish manufacturing facilities that utilise our local raw materials, particularly in automotive components sector like tire production.”

This not only creates jobs and stimulates economic growth but also diversifies our export base and reduces reliance on raw material exports, he added.

The country recorded a significant surge in the export of car tires in the first five months of 2025, as more tire manufacturers are continuing to invest and expand their operations in the country.

Cambodia exported car tires worth $560 million between January and May, an increase of nearly 80 percent from $308 million in the previous year, according to a Ministry of Commerce’s report.

Currently, there are six car tire manufacturing projects in different special economic zones in Cambodia.

Cambodia has so far planted rubber trees on a total area of 425,443 hectares, of which the trees on 330,259 hectares, or 78 percent, are old enough to be tapped.
