€90m Cyprus mountain highway on track for 2025 completion, minister says

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades inspected the Astromeritis-Evrychou motorway construction site on Tuesday, confirming the €90 million project remains on schedule for completion in October 2025.

The motorway, which began construction in October 2022, aims to strengthen connections between the Troodos mountain communities and Nicosia.

During his site visit, Vafeades expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that contractors are working to make up for delays caused by a strike in the ready-mix concrete industry.

“This is an impressive project that will significantly improve connectivity between mountain areas and Nicosia,” Vafeades said. “It represents our government’s ongoing commitment to providing mountain communities with faster access to workplaces, education, and healthcare.”

The minister also revealed plans for the project’s next phase, with tenders expected to begin around 2026. The entire motorway development is scheduled for completion by 2028-2029.

While acknowledging challenges in sourcing sufficient concrete for the large-scale construction, Vafeades expressed confidence in the contractors’ ability to maintain progress.
