ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy commenced drilling operations in Block 5 of Cyprus’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on Friday morning, marking a significant step in the country’s hydrocarbon exploration activities.
President Nikos Christodoulides announced that Cyprus aims to become an alternative and reliable natural gas source for the European Union. The exploration is part of the country’s strategy to enhance EU energy security and contribute to the diversification of its energy sources.

The drilling operation, conducted by the VALARIS DS-9 drillship, is expected to last several weeks. Results will be evaluated to determine the next phase of Cyprus’ energy planning.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) confirmed that the Navtex for the operation came into effect on January 19 and will remain active until June 19, 2025.
