Government to split Larnaca port and marina development

Government to split Larnaca port and marina development

The government has approved Larnaca’s request to develop its port and marina, opting to separate the two projects and proceed with urgent improvements, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades announced on Thursday.

At a press conference, Vafeades outlined the new implementation strategy, which aims to ensure long-term sustainability and allow specialised entities to manage each aspect of the development.

The government will prioritise works to enhance the quality of life for Larnaca’s residents and visitors, including:

  • Maintenance and upgrade of the existing marina, involving dredging and jetty repairs
  • Construction of the Larnaca Yacht Club, housing offices and recreational spaces
  • Landscaping and creation of public green spaces

The estimated cost of these works is €25-30 million (£21.5-25.8 million) plus VAT, to be executed by the Ministry of Transport, potentially in collaboration with Larnaca Municipality.

Vafeades stated, “The decision on expanding the marina and port will be made after expert studies, considering the needs in conjunction with the Vasiliko port expansion”.

The minister also announced additional projects to boost Larnaca’s development, including:

  • Implementation of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, costing approximately €18 million (£15.5 million)
  • A study on expediting the expansion of Panagoulis Avenue

“These measures aim to upgrade the marina’s social experience and enhance Larnaca’s tourism product, supporting the city’s overall development,” Vafeades added.

The government plans to gauge investor interest through a brief consultation process before commissioning specialist studies for future expansion.
