Govt gathers input to boost industrial sector

The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) held a meeting to review the implementation of the Cambodia Industrial Development Policy (IDP) from 2021 to 2023 to gather inputs to promote industrialisation, enhance its competitiveness and support the diversification of the national economy.

The meeting, organised by Aun Pornmoniroth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance (MEF), was participated by Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and Say Samal, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) held in Phnom Penh on January 8.

During the meeting, Chanthol briefed about the progress of the implementation of the ‘Cambodia Industrial Development Policy 2015-2025’ under the coordination of CDC.

He highlighted key points, including the RGC’s vision for developing the industrial sector, which focuses on promoting, modifying, and modernising the industrial structure by transforming it from a labour-intensive industry to a skill-based industry.

“The policy also focused on economic diversification, strengthening competitiveness, and enhancing productivity in response to the structural changes in the national, regional, and global economies, which are key drivers in shaping the content and format of IDP in 2021-2023,” Chanthol added.

Nut-Un Voanra, Deputy Secretary General of the Cambodian Investment Board (CIB) and also Head of the IDP Secretariat presented the implementation progress of IDP in 2021-2023, pointing out several key points.

He mentioned the importance of the cycle of promoting IDP, the preparation and the structure of the report, the methods for monitoring the policy and its achievements, the challenges and risks, and the direction for the next step.

Keo Rattanak, Minister of Mines and Energy (MME), Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC), Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI), Chea Somethy, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation (MoSVY) and Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) attended the meeting.

According to the CDC press release on January 9, the main objectives of this meeting were to review, discuss and provide input on the draft report detailing the progress of IDP implementation during 2021-2023.

Additionally, the meeting aimed to review and offer recommendations to promote the implementation of remaining and delayed measures. It also sought to provide recommendations for preparing the end-of-term evaluation report on the implementation of the IDP, the statement added.

Participants commended the CDC for its efforts in preparing a comprehensive progress report, showcasing achievements and measures implemented despite challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting the significant growth in Cambodia’s industrial sector, especially in manufacturing.
