Kingdom, Laos to enhance cross-border tourism

Synopsis: Both sides discuss ways to strengthen and expand cooperation under the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation.

Cambodia and Laos are committed to boosting national and international tourism to drive economic growth, improve livelihoods, and strengthen the traditional bonds of solidarity and friendship between their peoples.

During a meeting between Tourism Minister Huot Hak and Buakeo Phumvongsay, Ambassador of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LPDR) to Cambodia, both sides discussed ways to strengthen and expand cooperation under the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tourism Cooperation.

Cambodia and Laos also agreed to boost the growth of national and international tourists visiting the two countries.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Tourism, “They also exchanged views and strategies to further develop the tourism sector, particularly by attracting more international tourists to visit both neighbouring countries.”

“The Minister and the Ambassador expressed their shared view that tourism is considered important by the senior leaders of both countries in helping to boost economic growth and improve people’s livelihoods, as well as helping to strengthen the traditional bonds of solidarity and friendship between the people of the two countries.”

The discussion focused on facilitating travel and connecting tourist destinations between the two countries to be more convenient and time-saving, both by land and air, by increasing the existing direct and regular flights, facilitating travel procedures, especially for people living along the borders of the two countries to visit tourist destinations in border provinces.

It may be recalled that during the ASEAN Tourism Forum (AFT) 2022, the MoU was signed by the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of Laos, Suanesavanh Vignaket, and former Minister of Tourism Thong Khon to promote further work between both countries.

Cambodia-Laos Tourism Cooperation MoU focused on the facilitation of cross-border travel and other procedures to provide ease for travellers when crossing the border between the two countries.

According to the press release of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) on Tuesday, Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, accompanied by his spouse, paid an official visit to Cambodia from July 24-25, at the invitation of Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
