For decades, the Larnaca-Dhekelia road was a symbol of industry. The rhythmic hum of oil tankers and the silhouette of towering fuel tanks defined this coastal stretch. But today, a new vision rises from its industrial past—a future brimming with possibility. The Lefkaritis Group were the first to remove their fuel tanks and facilities, paving the way for an ambitious project. Welcome to ‘Land of Tomorrow’, a groundbreaking development that promises to reshape not just the coastline, but also the identity of Larnaca and Cyprus.
A legacy born of bold dreams
How did this once-industrial coastline transform into the foundation of a city’s new identity? The story begins in 1946, when the Lefkaritis brothers dared to dream big. They founded the Lefkaritis Bros General Partnership, focused on land transportation, and Lefkaritis Motors, specialising in importing vehicles and spare parts. But they didn’t stop there. Recognising an untapped opportunity, they made the bold decision to import fuel—not just for their own operations, but for the wider market, planting the seeds of an enterprise that would shape the region’s future.
“Everyone thought we would fail,” they recalled. But we had a vision, and we took the risk. Once we built our facilities, a fierce battle began. And thankfully, the public embraced and supported us.”
In 1959, Petrolina Ltd was born, becoming the first Cypriot petroleum company, operating in the import, storage and marketing of petroleum products. By 1960, Petrolina’s facilities were officially inaugurated, and by 1961, the company operated 12 petrol stations. In their first year, they captured 12 per cent of the market—a bold statement of resilience and innovation that embedded Petrolina into the economic fabric of the island.
Reimagining the coastline: ‘Land of Tomorrow’
The first phase of ‘Land of Tomorrow’, a strategic collaboration involving the Lefkaritis Group, Petrolina, bbf: and Foster + Partners, situated along the beachfront, is more than a development; it’s a vision for the future.
This extraordinary coastal community development represents a seamless fusion of nature, sustainability, and cutting-edge design. The coastline will be transformed into an accessible, inclusive space where the community can gather, thrive and dream.
Key highlights include:
- World-class amenities: vibrant shops, restaurants and bustling commercial streets.
- Elevated spaces for work, rest and collaboration: a luxurious hotel, a modern conference centre, and co-working hubs designed for the next generation of creatives and professionals.
- Nature redefined: about 20,000 trees will be planted, enriching the landscape and transforming the landscape into a serene coastal retreat.
In his address, Dinos Lefkaritis, CEO of the Lefkaritis Group described the moment as historic for the evolution of the Lefkaritis Group, emphasising that, with the creation of a coastal community focused on sustainability, ‘Land of Tomorrow’ will become a landmark for the entire area, attracting young people and businesses from all areas.
“Our vision is for this area to be transformed from an industrial zone into an entirely new destination that will enhance the valuable contribution of the city,” stressed CEO Lefkaritis. “As the natural evolution and expansion of Larnaca, it will be the legacy of the Lefkaritis family and a significant positive impact for future generations and the region.”
Shaping the future of Larnaca
Ultimately, ‘Land of Tomorrow’ is not just about aesthetics; it’s about sustainability and legacy. Project architects Foster + Partners are renowned for integrating environmental sensitivity with bold design. The result? A development that celebrates nature while forging a new identity for Larnaca.
Vadim Romanov, CEO of bbf:, highlighted the development’s significance. “This is an exciting project that inspires and motivates us immensely,” he said. “It is a big challenge, but our joint vision is to transform the former industrial zone as you have known it to date, into one of the most attractive beachfront communities in the Mediterranean. We are fully confident that this sustainable and progressive development will have a positive impact on the surrounding area, the economy, and on the evolution of our country for years to come.”
A glimpse of what’s to come
The first phase of ‘Land of Tomorrow’ will span 32,000 square metres along the coast. Five striking buildings will house amenities such as swimming pools, gyms and playgrounds, offering residents a luxurious, connected lifestyle. Pre-sales will launch in early 2025, with completion of this phase anticipated within 2-2.5 years.
The road ahead
As ‘Land of Tomorrow’ takes shape, it will signal a turning point for Larnaca—a metamorphosis from industrial hub to Mediterranean gem. The project won’t just transform the land, it will transform lives, creating a space where history and innovation converge to inspire future generations.
